Hexpen Manufacturing Instructions
Preface
These instructions are for machining the pen are intended for use on a manual lathe with an accurate 3 jaw chuck, or .375" hex and round collet using a general purpose carbide turning and facing tool and a .120" parting tool.
Machining Parts
Button
Operation 1
- On the lathe, chuck a .375 303 SS Round bar about 1 inch from the chuck jaws.
- Face off (zero the Z-axis dial).
- Turn to Z=-.680 (+.05) to a diameter of .3125-.3145 (zero X-axis dial).
- Turn a shoulder to Z=-.079 to a diameter of .2125 - .2165 (X-axis dial should read .049).
- Center drill
- Debur and polish
- Switch to parting tool and part at Z=-.680 (or .560 + parting blade thickness)
Operation 2
- Insert part into 3 jaw chuck or a collet with center-drill facing tailstock.
- Drill to a depth of .325 - .355 with a 3.5mm drill.
- Tap M4x0.7.
Operation 3
- Insert part into a 3 jaw chuck or collet with parted end facing tailstock.
- Take a small facing cut to clean parted end.
- Use a forming tool or file to produce the radius.
Tip
Operation 1
- On the lathe, chuck a .375 303 SS Round bar about 1.75 inches from the chuck jaws.
- Face off (zero the Z-axis dial).
- Turn to Z=-.433 to a diameter of .306 - .313 (zero X-axis dial).
- Turn thread relief to a diameter of .240 - .246.
- Center drill.
- Deburr and part at Z=-1.500.
Operation 2
- Insert part into a 3 jaw chuck or collet on the raw stock diameter with the machined end facing tailstock.
- Drill through with a long 3mm drill.
- Drill to a depth of .866 with a 5mm drill.
- Tap M8x1.25 to the shoulder
- Deburr with file and countersink.

Assembly
Body & Tip Assembly
- Mount Body in a 3 jaw chuck or collet with the threaded end facing tailstock.
- Zero the Z-axis dial on the Body.
- Screw tip into threaded end of the Body.
- Face the tip at Z=+.906.
- With compound set to 6.5° (13° included), turn a taper that starts fully at Z=-.049.
- Deburr and polish.
